Rinnoway Bermudez's family has a dark origin, one she is determined to put behind her. But when a dragon egg washes up on the shores of her hometown, the call toward adventure and magic becomes impossible to ignore. Rinnoway is flung from one disaster to the next- first a shipwreck, then a dangerous pirate encounter, and worst of all, reunion with her long lost brother. The two of them realize they are both being hunted by a powerful, wicked entity and must work together to survive. Rinnoway is certain Wylem Bermudez is not to be trusted until he sacrifices his freedom for hers, allowing himself to be captured to save her. Unnerved by his immoral past, but refusing to lose him forever, Rinnoway and her young dragon set out across a conflict-ridden magical realm on a perilous rescue mission with a newfound group of allies, discovering much more about their destiny as Dragon and Keeper along the way.

Now that Rinnoway Bermudez has recovered the Last Keeper's fated weapon and fully accepted her title, everything seems to have fallen into place. She and her dragon Amalen dominate the sky and the training field with ease, leaving behind their fears of failure and inadequacy. Her most pressing worry is encouraging her four teammates to get along, particularly with her brother, the mischievous, mysterious Wylem, who can't seem to stay out of trouble. With a battle against the Necromancer's freshest General approaching, Rinnoway hopes this will be an opportunity for the band to bond, but a catastrophic series of events throws a wrench into everyone's plans. Obligated by love for their leader, the four must work together in unlikely pairings to save The Last Keeper and therefore the Realm.

Sam is forced to confront warring feelings of loss, love, and duty. Diena struggles to balance the life she wants to live and the life her visions demand of her. Wylem hopes to prove a dirty thief and conniving spy can still be loved and trusted, and Phoebe must find her true role in the team.
